Periodically, Appomattox County will have a position or positions available for qualified individuals interested in employment with the County.  Any position for which the County is accepting applications will be posted on this web page.  Those wishing to apply for employment with the County are required to complete the County's Employment Application.

Volunteer opportunities also exist from time to time and will likewise be posted on this web page.  Volunteers, and the spirit of volunteerism, are important to the Community, and volunteer time and talents are greatly appreciated.  Those wishing to volunteer for service on one of the various County boards, committees and commissions should complete the Application for Citizen Service.

Position Announcement

Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff 

Part Time

The Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a qualified candidate for Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff. 

Duties include, but are not limited to:  

  • Provides law enforcement for Appomattox County;
  • Be a representative of the sheriff;
  • Report to shift supervisor and/or other ranking officer;
  • Answer and investigate complaints of the citizens;
  • Provide traffic enforcement for Appomattox County;
  • Conduct criminal investigations and follow up on complaints;
  • Prepare written reports accurately and timely;
  • Prepare cases to present and make court appearances as necessary;
  • Serve civil process and other legal process;
  • Execute criminal warrants;
  • Conduct crime prevention patrol to include checking security of buildings;
  • Perform office maintenance at discretion of a supervisor;
  • Ensure routine maintenance of assigned vehicle is performed;
  • Ensure assigned equipment is maintained in operational readiness;
  • Perform any other duties designated by a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Age of 21
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Passing an extensive  background investigation, to include a  drug screen
  • Passing an interview
  • Passing a physical examination
  • Be of good moral character
  • Any other standards set by law (Virginia Code 15.2-1705) or by policy of the Criminal Justice Services Board
  • Possess a valid Virginia operators license
  • Possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer Certification
