Appomattox... Where Our Nation Reunited

Appomattox County has been very pleased and honored to participate in the events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, a significantVTC-PicParch (resized) milestone in the history of our nation, our state and our community. Across Virginia and across the nation, Sesquicentennial commemorative events began in 2009 and will continue through 2015.

The capstone of our nation's Sesquicentennial events took place here in Appomattox the week of April 8 - 12, 2015.  The Appomattox Commemoration marked the 150th anniversary of the meeting of Generals Lee and Grant, the event which set forth the peace terms by which the people, both Northern and Southern, could begin to reunite after four horrible years of war. It had been, and still is, the worst period in the history of the United States.

After five years of commemorative activities at Harper's Ferry, Manasses, Antietam, Gettysburg, and a host of other historic sites around the country, April of 2015 brought the national spotlight to Appomattox.  In addition to major media coverage from coast to coast, the Appomattox events were well attended by thousands of visitors spanning the spectrum from casual observer to hard-core Civil War buffs who attended every major 150th commemoration over the previous five years.

It is estimated that more than 25,000 people attended the nearly 90 events in Appomattox, this along with close to 6,000 participants and volunteers, for a total of around 31,000.  The National Park Services estimates that roughly 25,000 people visited Appomattox Court House National Historical Park between April 8 and April 12 along with 1,000 reenactors and more than 300 volunteers. The Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox reported more than 4,000 visitors while the Appomattox Historical Society hosted 3,600 re-enactors and about 6,000 visitors.
