The purpose of the Community Development Department is to create a more livable community through shared commitments to managing growth (commercial, industrial, residential), preservation of rural lands and improving the quality of life through the development of recreational and cultural opportunities.
The Community Development Department is made up of three separate divisions (Building Inspections/Planning & Zoning/Erosion & Sediment Control) that work in unison to meet the needs of those citizens residing in the community as well as people visiting or working in Appomattox County.
The Planning & Zoning section is responsible for guiding and regulating the County’s long and short-range development. This includes the oversight of the County’s Comprehensive Plan, known as the Community Development Plan and the general administration of the Appomattox County Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance and Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance.
The Building Inspections section ensuring public safety and welfare associated with the design, construction and utilization of residential and commercial buildings by enforcing the statewide building codes and fire prevention codes.
The Erosion and Sediment Control section enforces the regulations adopted as part of the Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Erosion and Sediment Control Program. These regulations typically involve any land disturbing activity in excess of 5,000 square feet.
