Appomattox Court House National Historical Park Announces Healthy Parks Healthy People

Birding Walk: Meet park staff at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16 & October 28 at the Lee's Headquarters parking area for a walk through varied habitat searching for birds.  The 1.5-2 mile walk will offer opportunities to find birds in forested areas, a grassy field & along the Appomattox River.  Come out to see & hear a variety of local species in their natural habitat.  Dress accordingly for an outdoor walk & wear comfortable shoes.  Novices to experienced birders are welcome.  Binoculars will be provided or bring your own.  

Fun Run:  Join park staff at the North Carolina Monument parking area at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, September 13 & October 11 for a 2 mile Fun Run.  The trail is moderate in difficulty & does encompass a few moderate hills.  This event is for all runners who enjoy the outdoors.  The trail will take the runner through scenic landscape that maintains historical significance from Robert E. Lee's surrender to U.S. Grant on April 9, 1865.  Please bring proper footwear for running.

Dog Walk:  Bring your dog for a casual walk along one of the parks trails on Saturday, August 26, September 23 & October 21 at 10:00 a.m., beginning at Lee's Headquarters Pull Off.  Enjoy a summertime walk through the park with your dog along the approximately 1.5-2 mile trail.  Please wear appropriate shoes for walking in the woods.  All dogs must be on a leash. 

Appomattox Court House National Park Evening "History at Sunset" Walking Tour Programs

Appomattox Court House - Past to Present:  On August 26, 2017, the history of the village from stage coach stop to National Historical Park & how local citizens helped to make that happen.  Join a Park Ranger for a talk about the history of Appomattox Court House & a tour of some of the significant buildings in that history.  Meet at the flag pole near the village parking lot.

September 2, 2017:  George Peers:  For 40 years, George Peers served as the clerk of Appomattox County court, living just down the street from the courthouse.  Take a stroll through the village during this first person living history presentation to learn about life in the village, the last Confederate artillery shots fired from his front yard & the surrender meeting.  Meet at the flag pole near the village parking lot.

September 16, 2017:  Lee's Last Council of War:  Surrounded & increasingly desperate, Lee called his officers together for one last Council of War to determine the fate of the Confederacy & ultimately, the future of our nation.  Meet at Lee's Headquarters parking area 1.5 miles northeast of the main park entrance along Virginia Rt. 24. 

Adult CPR & First Aid Classes/HCP & CPR

Decoy Carving Workshop

Learn to carve your own duck decoy or sharpen your carving skills.  Beginners welcome & carving experience is not needed.  Class will be held September 17 - 21, 2017 at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center.  Instructions & kits are provided by carver Ed Morrison.  Cost is $295 & covers all programming & instructor fees, decoy kit, meals & lodging.  To register call 434-248-5444.

Weaving Workshop

Learn how to weave a beautiful scarf.  Class will be held October 1 - 4, 2017 at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center.  The cost is $45 & includes loom use & yarn, expert instruction, meals & lodging.  To register call 434-248-5444.  

Academic Cafe

Want somewhere to relax and read a book or do some research?  The Academic Cafe located in the New Geneva Leadership Academy offers relaxing areas to sit, inside and out.  Visit their book store and extensive research library.  Hi-Speed internet access is available.  The cafe also offers a snack bar as well.  Located at 222 Harrell Street, downtown Appomattox.  Open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Boating Safety Education Classroom Course

The Department of Game & Inland Fisheries hold Boating Safety Education Courses in the surrounding area.  To fine a class that is FREE to the public and to register, go to www.dgif.virginia.gov and click on boating or call 800-830-2268.   

Chalk Painting

Learn how to distress furniture by using the chalk painting technique.  Classes are held at Nina Bells Cottage, located on the corner of Isbell Street and Court Street, Appomattox.  All materials are furnished  To find out the next class date, contact Denise Mays at 434-352-7510.  Cost of the class is $35.00.

Pickleball

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America & now you can play here in Appomattox.  It is a combination of tennis, badminton & ping pong, using an oversized paddle, a whiffle ball & played on a mini-tennis court.  Games are played at the Grace Hills Baptist Church gym on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. & on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m.  Contact Linda Peters at wbpeteski@aol.com for more information.  

 The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy

The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy offers many extra curricula classes & various alternative educational programs for the community throughout the year.  Options include music & art programs & exhibitions, history, theology, literature, Christian economics, math tutoring & more.  Special speakers & events are periodically arranged.  Homeschooling families are encouraged & welcomed! 

Student ages range from pre-K through college level.

AJ Skateworld

  Triad Community Senior Program

Triad is a one hour program for Seniors held at 1:00 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every other month at the Appomattox Community Center.  The program brings seniors & law enforcement together to interact & discuss awareness programs in the community and educates seniors about safety and how to reduce crimes that seniors experience.  Individual speakers come in each month & present a different topic.  Scheduled meetings for 2017 are, February 28, April 25, June 27, August 22, October 24 and December 12.  For more information contact the Appomattox County Sheriff's Department  434-352-8241.

Central Virginia Alliance For Community Living, Inc.

The Central Virginia Alliance For Community Living, Inc. is an agency that offers senior services to citizens in Appomattox County, such as, transportation and nutritious meals.  The agency has a site at the Appomattox Community Center and meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  For more information on this program contact Shirley Wheeler at 434-352-7820 or the Lynchburg office at 434-385-9070.

 Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program

 Painting with Christine

Paint a beautiful 12x16 picture you can take home the day of your class.  No painting experience needed.  The cost of the class is $60, all supplies are furnished except for paper towels.  The next scheduled classes for 2017 are as follows;  September 12, October 17, November 14 & December 5 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Appomattox Community Center.  To view a picture of the painting that is scheduled, go to Christine's web page at www.paintingwithchristine.com.

All participants must register ahead of time by calling the Appomattox Community Center at 434-352-5996 & payment must be made prior to each painting class.  You will not be considered registered for a class unless payment is received in full prior to the class.  Full refunds will be given if the class is canceled due to lack of enrollment.  Participants will be notified of the cancellation.  With any participant registration cancellation a $15 cancellation fee will be retained.  Payment should be made payable to Christine Smith & mailed to P.O. Appomattox Lions Club

Join the Appomattox Lions Club.  Meetings are held at Granny Bee's Restaurant on the second Thursday of each month.  They have informative speakers & enjoy a catered meal.  For more information contact John Redding at 434-352-0532.
